The CCM Brass Choir is planning a tribute to Betty Glover (1923-2022), who was the first female bass trombonist of a major orchestra in America. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday Nov. 12, at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington.
Former student and CCM faculty Marie Speziale told the UC Alumni Association: “I first met Betty in 1960, my freshman year at CCM. As a young female brass player with no women as role models at the time, I found her immense presence in the Cincinnati community of musicians extremely inspiring and impactful.” Read the UC Alumni Association’s feature story on Glover from 2021.
The CCM Brass Choir is led by Timothy Northcut, music director and conductor, and the concert will feature guest conductors Marie Speziale (a trailblazing brass player and retired CSO trumpeter who earned her bachelor’s degree at CCM in 1964) and Professor Emeritus Earl Rivers.
